About me: I'm an American linguist and hyperpolyglot (certified by HYPIA as speaking 6+ languages). I passed the highest level of the Chinese proficiency test (HSK 6).

But trust me, I am NOT a natural when it comes to learning languages. I spoke only English until the age 21, and when I was in high school, I struggled to even pass Spanish (my heritage language...so that was particularly embarassing)

My breakthrough came during my life as an academic studying psycholinguistics: I studied how languages are structured and how they are acquired in the human brain. Those studies helped me learn several languages, despite my initial high school struggles.

Now I hope I can help other people learn how to learn languages too (and show them why they should bother!) I consult (for companies and individuals) on topics related to language learning, and blog about how to learn languages at misslinguistic.com.

I'm also the founder of Meridian Linguistics, which provides Asian language translation and AI training data services to technology companies. Our Hong Kong-based team has worked with Airbnb, The Economist, Alibaba, and more.

I am currently based in Beijing.

Want to learn a foreign language? italki has been, hands-down, the most valuable tool for me for over five years now. I use this platform to find tutors for everything from French conversational skills to Russian test prep.

Want to learn Indonesian? I really like IndonesianPod101's lessons, especially on the app. They teach real, colloquial language, and the app is particularly convenient to use.

Sign up for IndonesianPod101 here.

Here for Mandarin Chinese? I use Chineseclass101 (for reading and cultural context) and Skritter (for practicing characters). Both are apps that are convenient to use on your own time, at your own pace. Think of them as more comprehensive versions of Duolingo.
